Eriksson Refuses To Quit
who: Sven Goran Eriksson
what: Says he has no reason to quit after disappointing result against Austria
when: Yesterday
snippet: "Sven-Goran Eriksson insists he has no plans to quit as England coach, despite speculation he could be sacked if his side do not win in Poland on Wednesday," says the BBC. "Eriksson is under more pressure after Saturday`s 2-2 draw with Austria, when England squandered a two-goal lead."

"Defeat in Poland on Wednesday will surely see the Swede axed," says The Sun`s Shaun Custis. "But he will demand full payment of his £4.5m-a-year deal in compensation."

"I plan to carry on until 2008," he says, quoted in The Mirror. "I`m positive that I will not be leaving and I am quite sure that we will reach the World Cup. I will not think about losing in Poland. I refuse to do that because I don`t see any reason why we will lose. To be top of the Group we have to win in Poland and we must try to do that."

The coach isn`t the only one`s whose England future is in doubt. A howler by goalkeeper David James - whose qualifications to succeed David Seaman have always been under scrutiny - provoked calls for him to be dropped forthwith. But Eriksson intimated that this would be tantamount to "panic".

"I think the worst thing I could do at this moment is to panic, changing five players for Wednesday, taking out Michael Owen, David Beckham or whoever else," he says, quoted in The Independent. "I will not panic. I will stick to more or less the same formation. I haven`t decided exactly yet, but it won`t be a revolution." [... more]
