The New Jim Nicholson
who: Spurs
what: Appoint Martin Jol as head coach
when: Yesterday
snippet: "Martin Jol became the latest man to attempt to introduce some colour footage into Tottenham`s black-and-white glory years video yesterday," says The Independent`s Glenn Moore, "and immediately gave an impassioned speech in which he pledged to do his best to be `a second Bill Nicholson`."
"I was at the Bill Nicholson memorial service on Sunday and my first thought was that it would be marvellous to be the second one at this club," he says, quoted in The Mirror paying tribute to the beloved manager who steered Spurs to the Double in 1961. "That`s impossible but I want the feeling he had for the rest of his life after being successful here."
The Dutchman, a former Coventry and West Bromwich Albion star who has been at White Hart Lane for fourth months, succeeds Frenchman Jacques Santini, who resigned on Friday, and will be the ninth full-time manager or head coach at Spurs in 13 years, recalls the BBC.
"It was like watching one of George Bush`s folksy campaign rallies right down to the slips of the tongue," continues Glenn Moore, "Jol at one stage referring to `Jim Nicholson`. That prompted murmurs but he was forgiven as he paced the room, tugging at the heartstrings, pledging his loyalty to the cause." [... more]
