Emlyn Hughes 1947-2004
who: Emlyn Hughes
what: Dies, aged 57
where: SHEFFIELD
when: Yesterday
snippet: "Liverpool is a city that has recently been denigrated for wallowing in grief," comments Oliver Kay in The Times, "but there was nothing mawkish about the tears shed yesterday for one of its adopted sons."
"The former England and Liverpool captain whose distinctive voice and infectious laugh endeared him to a generation of television viewers on A Question of Sport, died yesterday from a brain tumour at the age of 57," says The Guardian. He was recruited to Liverpool from Blackpool by Bill Shankly in 1967, aged 19, beginning a 12 year career at Anfield during which he made 657 appearances and led the team to victory in two European Cups, two UEFA Cups, four league championships and an FA Cup. "He was capped 62 times for England," recalls The Scotsman`s Jim McBeth, "and captained his country in 23 internationals."
The Telegraph recalls a story Hughes used to tell about the night Shankly collected the teenager from Blackpool. On the journey to Anfield, they were stopped by a policeman for speeding, writes Paul Eccleston, and Shankly tried to talk his way out by telling the officer he had "the England captain in the back."
"The policeman peered into the back and said: `That`s not the England captain`," the story goes. "Shankly responded: `Not yet. But he soon will be`." [... more]
