"Danielle Beccan was killed in an apparently random shooting as she walked home from a funfair with a group of friends." The Sun says Danielle was cradled in the arms of her mother, Paula Platt, as she lay fatally wounded in the early hours of Saturday morning in the St Ann`s area of town. She died on the operating table at the Queen`s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Police are apparently nonplussed. "We have got no idea of a motive," says Superintendent David Colbeck. "If people are now targeting 14-year-old children, I don`t know what depths they are sinking to." Assistant Chief Constable Susannah Fish says she hopes the killing will not lead to retaliatory violence. "There may be retribution because of the sickening and high-profile nature of this crime," she says, quoted in The Scotsman.
