"Ivan slammed either into or very near Grand Cayman at around noon local time yesterday following several hours of high winds that felled trees and knocked out power lines," reports The Independent`s Andrew Gumbel. "`Oh my God, oh my God, the roof is coming off!` a woman at the Adams Guest House in George Town told a reporter shortly before the phone went dead."

"For about the last seven hours it`s been like standing next to a train track with a very heavy fast freight train roaring by," says Wes Emanuel of the Cayman Government Information Service, quoted in The Sun. "We know there is damage and it is severe."

"The next island in its path, Cuba, ordered a mass evacuation of the south coast at the weekend, particularly the western tobacco-growing province, Pinar del Rio," says The Guardian.
