Dunblane Survivor Wins Tennis Title
who: Tennis player Andrew Murray
what: Wins US Open junior title
where: NEW YORK
when: Yesterday
snippet: "Andrew Murray has gone where not even Tim Henman has been before," says The Telegraph, "he is the new US Open junior champion, the first that Britain has ever had, after his 6-4, 6-2 win over Sergiy Stakhovsky yesterday."
"In previous years," recalls The Scotsman`s Jonathan Lessware, "the title Murray now owns has been claimed by Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg and Andy Roddick. Roger Federer and Boris Becker were both runners-up in the early stages of their careers."
"He was just eight when crazed Thomas Hamilton, 43, walked into his school in Dunblane, Scotland, and shot dead a teacher and 16 children aged four and five in 1996," says The Sun. "Andrew was on his way to the gym where the gunman opened fire when he was ushered into the headmaster`s office for safety."
"I knew the guy who did the shooting, we all went to his boys` clubs and everybody knew him," he says, quoted by the BBC. "But I was young at the time and didn`t really realise how it was a really difficult time for the town, but I think everyone has recovered really well from it and the town has moved on."
Meanwhile, in the senior tournament, Roger Federer claimed his third grand slam title of 2004 by comfortably beating Lleyton Hewitt 6-0, 7-6, 6-0. He beat Britain`s Tim Henman almost as easily - 6-3 6-4 6-4 - in Saturday`s semi-final. [... more]
