Silverstone Back On Track

snippet: "Nigel Mansell`s bid to run the British Grand Prix has been thrown out," says The Times, "but the race could still be saved within days as talks near a solution."

Sources close to the negotiations are reported be saying that Silverstone will be included on Formula One`s 2005 calendar today. However, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and the British Racing Drivers` Club, owner of Silverstone circuit, have yet to agree a deal. Ecclestone has been publicly critical of the Silverstone facilities and appeared to pull the plug last month when the BRDC failed to meet his financial terms.

"Sports minister Richard Caborn, who has been working behind the scenes to bring the BRDC and Formula One together," explains the BBC. "It is understood the deal will not involve Brand Synergy, the company which includes Nigel Mansell as one of its backers."

"I am very hopeful that it will be on the calendar for next year, even though it may be subject to contract," says Mr Caborn, quoted in The Independent today. "I am also hopeful we`ll get a two-year deal which will allow us to plan to realise the full potential of the Silverstone estate." [... more]
