Champions` League Round-Up
who: Arsenal
what: Beat PSV Eindhoven 1-0 in Champions` League Group E
where: Highbury, LONDON
when: Last night
snippet: London`s top teams made a winning start to their Champions` League campaigns last night but in Glasgow, erstwhile Parkhead legend Henrik Larsson came off the bench to complete Barcelona`s 1-3 defeat of Celtic in Group F.
Arsenal were "relatively convincing" at Highbury, where they beat PSV Eindhoven 1-0 in Group E, says The Independent. "The scoreline, secured by an own goal after a brilliant piece of trickery by Thierry Henry, left too slim a margin of error," comments Jason Burt. "It wasn`t exactly winning ugly - Arsenal never do that - but it was a little plain."
Meanwhile, in Paris, Chelsea smashed PSG 0-3 in Group H thanks to a header from John Terry and two goals from Didier Drogba, says The Times, "the second a wonderful free kick that thrilled the former Marseilles forward on a noisy return to France, [and] reflected accurately the gulf between Chelsea and a terribly timid Paris Saint-Germain".
Celtic fought hard for their result and "even Frank Rijkaard, the Barca coach, must have been squirming in his dug-out," when substitute Chris Sutton equalised, says Glenn Gibbons. But the home side conceded to Barcelona`s obvious class and there was a certain poignant inevitability about the 82nd minute strike by the returning Swede.
Tonight, Liverpool play host to Monaco while Manchester United travel to Lyon. Both matches kick off at 7.45pm. [... more]
