US Troops Sieze Fallujah

"Tank commanders said late on Sunday that the Shuhada district in the south of the city, the last rebel stronghold, still had a significant number of guerrillas," says Sky News. "The military said 38 of their soldiers are dead and 275 wounded after the six-day offensive in Fallujah."

"US forces now occupy - but have yet to subdue - the entire city. It could still take several days of fighting to clear the final pockets of resistance," says The Scotsman. "As the battle for Fallujah continued, concern has been growing for civilians still trapped inside the town without access to food or medical supplies."

Colonel Mike Shupp, spokesman for the US marines, has rejected an offer from the Iraqi Red Crescent Society to deliver aid to the city. The charity`s convoy of food and medicine was turned away on Saturday but it "believes at least 150 families are trapped, with many people in desperate need of food, blankets, water and medicine".
