US Marine Shot Dead Unarmed Man
who: US Marines
what: Launch investigation after video shows unarmed Iraqi prisoner being shot dead by Marine
where: Fallujah, Iraq
when: Yesterday
snippet: "The US Marine Corps launched an investigation into possible war crimes last night," reports The Independent, "after video footage taken inside a mosque in Fallujah apparently showed a Marine shooting dead an unarmed Iraqi insurgent who had been taken prisoner."
The footage of the apparent killing was videotaped by pool correspondent Kevin Sites of NBC television, reports The Evening Standard`s website, thisislondon.com, "who said three other previously-wounded prisoners in the mosque apparently had also been shot again by the Marines inside the building."
"The footage shows a second group of marines entering the mosque on Saturday amid reports that the building had been reoccupied," reports The Guardian. "Off camera, one marine can be heard asking if the Iraqis are armed. Moments later, a marine can be heard saying: `He`s f***ing faking he`s dead. He`s faking he`s f***ing dead`. There is shouting among the marines and then one opens fire. At that point news channels, including CNN, blacked out the image."
"Pentagon officials said the marine who fired had been taken off the battlefield," says The Scotsman. "It also emerged that the marine in question had been shot and wounded the day before the incident in the mosque." [... more]
