Beckham "Very, Very Stupid"
who: David Beckham
what: Says he`d like to beat Bobby Moore`s record of 108 England appearances
where: Madrid, Spain
when: Yesterday
snippet: "David Beckham said yesterday that he had turned down a part in the forthcoming remake of The Pink Panther," reports The Times. "He said that he was too busy to join in the slapstick with Steve Martin and Beyoncé. Others might argue that he has put his foot in it Clouseau-style often enough."

The England captain scotched speculation that he plans to after the 2006 World Cup and revealed the extent of his ambition to the gathered media yesterday when he said he hoped to exceed Bobby Moore`s record of 108 England caps.

"I set a target for myself when I got into the England team and when I was given the captaincy to reach the record of Bobby Charlton, who`s an idol of mine and my Dad`s, and Bobby Moore`s record," says Beckham, quoted in The Independent. "To be up there with Sir Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore would be amazing."

"It would appear that Peter Shilton, who holds the record with 125 England caps, is either beyond Beckham`s reach or not worthy of emulation," comments The Independent`s Paul Newman.

But if that seems a little pedantic, it`s nothing to the bitchy riposte from Oliver Holt, The Mirror`s chief sports writer, who recalls the folly of TV cook Nigella Lawson comparing herself to Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe and concludes: "He made himself appear deluded. And self-important. And overblown. And ridiculous. And most of all, very, very stupid." [... more]
