snippet: "The United States felt the full deadly fury of Hurricane Ivan yesterday," says The Scotsman, "as it tore into the Gulf of Mexico coastline, killing at least 12 people and destroying scores of buildings."
At least 18 people died, says The Guardian, and the coastline was pummelled from Louisiana to Florida "with severe winds, torrential rain and waves as high as 25ft".
"The eye of the hurricane hit Mobile, Alabama, at around 3am local time, but nearby states bore the brunt of deaths," says The Mirror. "Eight were killed in Florida, including a girl of eight whose mobile home was flattened by an uprooted tree. In Louisiana four ill people - one with terminal cancer - died as they were moved to a safer part of the state."
Meanwhile, reports the BBC, "another storm, named Jeanne, has killed at least one person in the Dominican Republic and two in Puerto Rico". And The Times reports that Cayman Islanders are begging the UK for aid after 90% of its buildings suffered damage when Ivan struck last weekend. [... more]
