Sixth Time Unlucky For Spurs
who: Spurs
what: Lose 1-0 to Aston Villa
where: Villa Park, BIRMINGHAM
when: Last night
snippet: "Martin Jol watched Spurs lose their sixth Premiership game in a row — then backed them to start winning," says The Sun`s Janine Self after Tottenham travelled to Villa Park and lost 1-0 last night thhanks to Nolberto Solano`s 57th minute "wonder goal".
"To say Villa`s goal came against the run of play was something of an understatement," writes The Guardian`s Adrian Milledge. "It followed a corner taken by Thomas Hitzlsperger that Frédéric Kanouté failed to head clear. Instead the ball found Nolberto Solano, who with the Spurs defence statuesque, was afforded the time to execute a spectacular left-footed scissors kick to slam the ball past Paul Robinson."
Villa have made "steady, unspectacular progress" into fifth place in the Premiership above Manchester United while Spurs languish just two points above the relegation zone. A win for them "is now vital," says Rick Broadbent in The Times. "Tottenham were let down by their finishing. Jermain Defoe and Frédéric Kanouté were thorny presences throughout, but the bottom line was the bum deal in the danger zone. Talent, talent everywhere and not a goal in sight."
"I think we are in for a good spell soon," Jol tells Ms Self, confidantly. "I could do with some results but we have terrific spirit and mentality in the squad and I am sure it will come right." [... more]
