Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has been declared the winner of the presidential election but as many as 200,000 opposition supporters seethed within spitting distance of departing president Leonid Kuchma`s palace in Kiev yesterday after allegations that the election had been rigged in favour of Mr Yanukovych, the pro-Russian candidate backed by the incumbent.
Meanwhile, Viktor Yushchenko received a message of support from former Czech president Vaclav Havel, "architect of Czechoslovakia`s Velvet Revolution", and Ukraine`s own diplomats criticised the flawed presidential poll, says The Independent. "International observers have described the poll as seriously flawed," says the BBC.
"Ukraine is on the threshold of a civil conflict," Mr Yushchenko says, quoted in The Guardian. "We have two choices: the answer will be given by the parliament, or the streets will give an answer." [... more]
