Ukraine To Hold Fresh Election

snippet: Outgoing Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma has indicated that there will be fresh presidential elections to settle once and for all the disputed victory of pro-Russian prime minister Viktor Yanukovych and to stem the rising tide of the so-called "Orange" or "Chestnut" Revolution.

Mr Kuchma said: "If we really want to preserve peace and consensus and build this just democratic society of which we speak so much but have failed to carry out in a legal way, let us have new elections."

"His statement came as tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered for the eighth day in the capital, Kiev, to repeat their demands for the results of last weekend`s disputed elections to be overturned," reports The Telegraph`s correspondent Julius Strauss, from the capital. Meanwhile, the country`s Supreme Court is deliberating over the allegations of vote rigging but "early hopes of a ruling in favour of the opposition were dashed as it become clear that the ruling was likely to be of a highly technical nature and could take several days".

"In Britain Baroness Thatcher issued a rare statement to give warning that a new Iron Curtain was threatening to fall across Ukraine," says The Times.

"The West and its leaders must act decisively to support the brave Ukrainian democrats in their struggle," she says. "Tyranny must not prevail." [... more]
