And while £20,000 is the average, some dogs cost much more, with the Great Dane coming top at £31,840 for a lifetime of food and vet bills. In other animal research news, a report from Tuesday`s Guardian says Dutch researcher Kees Moeliker has discovered some perverse patterns of sexual behaviour among mallards, including homosexual necrophilia. And in another insurance company survey, this time picked up by The Scotsman, Direct Line Home Response 24 reckons that rampaging toddlers do £172million worth of damage to our homes every year.
