snippet: Elvis Presley is Number One for the second consecutive week thanks to a programme of reissues in which his singles are being made available in chronological order in limited quantities. `One Night` (along with its original double a-side of `I Got Stung`) is the 1,000th single to top the UK chart and appears to have sold rather better than last week`s chart-topper `Jailhouse Rock`, which was reportedly the lowest-selling record ever to achieve that honour, with sales of just 21,262. According to James Masterton`s weekly column for Yahoo! Launch, `One Night` is also Elvis`s 20th Number One hit, it`s one of only four records to get to Number One twice and it is only the third time in chart history that an artist has been knocked off the top spot by one of their own records (the previous high-achievers being The Beatles in 1963 and John Lennon in 1981).
But there`s plenty more activity in the Top Ten this week. `Empty Souls`, the second single from the new Manic Street Preachers album, is new at Two and Las Vegas`s finest The Killers are new at Three with the re-release of `Somebody Told Me`. Their debut album, Hot Fuss, has incidentally climbed one place to this week`s Number One. The winner of the X Factor, Steve Brookstein, drops from Two to Four with `Against All Odds` and there`s a new entry for British rock act Rooster with their second Top Ten hit `Staring At The Sun` at Five. Soul Central`s version of the house classic `Strings Of Life`, featuring a vocal by Kathy Brown, is new at Six and finally Darius Danesh has a new entry at Seven with `Live Twice`. [... more]
