World News 23-06-2005
who: Saddam Hussein
what: Likes Cheetos and Raisin Bran, US captors reveal
where: Iraq
when: Monday
snippet: News of Saddam`s human side has emerged from interviews with GIs Sean O`Shea and Jesse Dawson by GQ magazine, conducted with permission from the US military, says The Times. The former dictator "insisted on having his drinks at room temperature and guzzled family-size bags of Doritos nacho chips," reports James Bone. "He liked Raisin Bran Crunch cereal, but implored his captors `No Froot Loops!` He saved bread and cereal so that he could feed the birds and ate petals from flowers he grew in the prison. Saddam would also share his poetry with the soldiers, often to their bemusement." Meanwhile, the violence continues as always. At least 23 people died when a suicide bomber struck the Ibn Zanbour (Son of the Wasp) kebab restaurant in Baghdad on Sunday; on Tuesday, another suicide car bomber killed at least 15 traffic policemen and wounded about 100 more in Irbil; and at least 18 people were killed and 46 wounded in three car bomb attacks in Baghdad on Thursday. Also on Monday, but not repoerted until Thursday, was a massive assault by up to 100 rebels on a police complex in the southern suburbs of Baghdad. The Guardian says the attackers used a combination of "heavy shelling, diversionary feints, infantry thrusts and suicide vehicles", leaving dozens dead. On a cheerier note, The Telegraph`s Oliver Poole reports that 7,000 spectators are regularly defying the suicide bombers by attending games at Baghdad`s Sha`ab stadium following the the resumption of the national football league.
