Red Lake`s Angel of Death
who: 16-year-old `disaffected Native American student` Jeff Weise
what: Kills ten in High School gun rampage
where: Red Lake, Minnesota
when: Monday
snippet: 16-year-old "disaffected Native American student" Jeff Weise, recently suspended from school, shot dead his policeman grandfather and his partner on Monday before putting on a bulletproof vest and driving his grandfather`s patrol car to Red Lake High School in northern Minnesota where he killed five students, a teacher and a security guard. He then turned one of his guns on himself. 15 others were injured. "It was the worst school shooting in the US since 15 people died in the Columbine massacre in 1999," says The Guardian.

Witness Reggie Graves "said he was in class watching a film about Shakespeare when he heard Weise shoot his way past the metal detector at the school`s entrance," writes Andrew Buncombe in The Independent. "In a nearby classroom, he heard Weise talking to another student - a boy called Ryan. `He asked Ryan if he believed in God,` said Reggie. `And then he shot him`."

"After he shot a security guard, he walked down the hallway shooting and went into a classroom where he shot a teacher and more students," says Roman Stately, the Red Lake fire director, quoted in The Times. "It was just so sad to see the children lying on the floor like that, lying on top of each other. Just a terrible sight... I have seen a lot of bad scenes in my time but nothing like this."

"As the tiny rural community attempted to come to terms with the tragedy," says Thursday`s Scotsman, "authorities were sifting through the dead teenager`s past in an effort to make sense of his actions."

"Relatives said his father committed suicide four years ago. His mother, who has brain injuries from a car crash, lives in a Minneapolis nursing home," says The Mirror. "Pupils said Weise wrote messages expressing support for Hitler on a right-wing website. A writer who identified himself as Jeff Weise of the Red Lake Reservation posted messages under the nickname Todesangel - German for Angel of Death." [... more]
