snippet: The "sunshine implant", already in use for Parkinson`s disease sufferers, "can brighten the mood and switch off depression," says The Mirror. Prof Mayberg has now tried the procedure on eight patients suffering severe depression, without any side-effects. "During the procedure, patients received a local anaesthetic before a hole the size of a five pence coin was bored into their skull," says The Guardian`s science correspondent, Ian Sample. "Two wires, each thinner than a human hair, were inserted into the brain... when the electrodes were in the right spot, patients often experienced a sudden improvement in their mood." [... more]
